These times they are a-changing

Bit of a heavy subject ahead. Well, it should be, if I understood it.

Time has been discussed greatly this week as 1) there is a party next weekend with a "time" theme and 2) the clocks they are a-changing.

To the former: The theme is a general one, whereby you should dress as an era. Quite vague if you ask me, and no-one else has found my idea of going as "it's Chico time" very amusing. So I won't go.

To the latter: clock changing is ridiculous. I asked a some friends why the clocks changed and received these, amongst others, as replies:
"Because Scotland wouldn't get any daylight, otherwise"
"For farmers"
"Because of the war".

Hmm. I thought the change to British Summertime meant that days would be especially long in Summer, then the Autumnal change just resorts back to normal, actual time. Whatever that means. There is now talk of moving everything forward an hour so we have longer days. Can't we just stay in bed an extra hour? Or should that be an hour less? I don't know. Time messes with my head. I don't like it.

Ooh maybe I could go as "What time is love?" to the party. Maybe I could go as Mr Wolf. Nah, bugger the party. I need to stay in and see X factor as I haven't seen it at all this series. Yesterday I missed it in order to enjoy a cinema trip. Instead the film involved someone getting stabbed in the eye. Not pleasant at all.

PS I should go as the popular periodical, "Dream Time"! Now the ideas are flowing...

wastebook

In response to this riling article by the BBC, I have outlined 15 reasons why Facebook is a pile of pants:

1) Only boring people waste time refreshing their facebook accounts in the hope that someone who wouldn't normally email/call/contact them, will have written on their wall.

2) Facebook allows people that you have been trying to avoid the calls of for months to contact you.

3) Facebook is a sad popularity contest.

4) Facebook allows people to show themselves off. "Oh how did this incredibly attractive photo of me get on there? I was having fun, though. I was very drunk. Let me tell you all about me me me...". Sod off, egotist.

5) Facebook is not an accurate depiction of reality. People start taking photos to put on their Facebook accounts instead of just having a nice time.

6) As noted by the Beeb, approx 233 million hours of work are lost each month in the UK due to staff looking at social networks. I don't know how they did that research exactly (I daresay it's more than that, anyway). Poor bugger who's the RA on that. But what a waste! (Btw I'm blogging on my designated hour for lunch.)

7) Facebook facilitates stalking.

8) People who have a Facebook account think they're cool. They're not.

9) Some Uni people are trying to use Facebook to set up staff/student groups, as if that wouldn't result in trouble.

10) Facebook lingo is terribly annoying.

11) Why would anyone want a completely public profile? A little privacy is a grand thing, you know.

12) Facebook is like google; interfering. They make it difficult for you to leave and keep details that you haven't disclosed to them. How rude.

13) A book of faces? What?

14) Social networking? No. It's not now is it. It's pretending to have more friends than you actually have. Try actually socially networking by going out once in a while. Or be honest and admit that you'd really prefer to watch Hollyoaks. Incidentally myspace shouldn't have tried to do the "social networking" thing either. It was great initially; giving bands the chance to publicise themselves easily. Now artists feel that they're rubbish if they don't have a myspace. Terribly sad. Especially when it will eventually lose all recognition because it's just not Facebook.

15) I don't like it one bit.

learning to drive and Dumbledore being gay

This week I have been very busy. Working mostly. But I also knitted a bit, bought and assembled filing cabinets (with minimal swearing, I hasten to add), went to see Rufus Wainwright (who irritated my friends greatly), schmoozed with the Thrills, got my viva date, had my first driving lesson (finally) and did one or two other things as well.

My feet don't reach the pedals in my instructor's car. Not sure how to deal with this. Suppose will try some small comfortable heels next week. And I did adjust the seat, by the way.

Dumbledore's gay then. Not a surprise. I think Malfoy should have been gay as there aren't enough gay bullies in the world. It would be quite pro gay rights (depicting strong gay characters) and would challenge some stereotypes.

I'm going to do the Moonwalk in May; and I don't mean the MJ cool-walk, but only because I struggle with the moves (despite having a video clip on my laptop instructing how to do so). It's the London marathon route, power-walked, in your bra to raise money for breast cancer. Better get training. Maybe by that time I'll be able to drive round.

Shit it's 22.39 and I still have lectures to prep for tomorrow. In reality I'll soon be asleep; I would like to pretend here that as a busy professional I have to get early nights in order to recuperate for the extremely hectic day that lies ahead tomorrow. This is partly true. However my Bagpuss hot water bottle (hottle bottle) is calling out to me, and if I try to do any reading with it nearby I'll fall asleep. It's cold in my flat, alright?

beautiful things

In the absence of having anything to blog/strop about, I thought I would display my delight at a few things.

Firstly, I discovered an artist yesterday whose album has blown me away. I buy/get hold of (buy more these days) about 3 albums a week yet I haven't been struck by one in bloody ages. I highly recommend Alex Cornish's "Until the Traffic Stops", so long as you appreciate the whines of introspective singer/songwriters.

Secondly, The Flight of the Conchords has not only been greatly amusing, it's also filled a TV-drought. Hurrah for kiwi comic parody-musicians!

Thirdly, I got hold of the Science of Sleep on DVD yesterday. Apparently it's been out a while, but I'm no film buff so have no idea about these things. Beautiful film. Beautiful! I can't recall if I have blogged about it previously...

Blogging community quiet. Little to blog about I suppose. And little time in which to do it, now I'm a professional (ha). Work is busy, but all is going well. Am quite enjoying it in fact. I'm allowing myself a brief research break before the viva (not sure when that will be yet), after which I suppose I shall have to work madly in order to find the time for dreamy things.

Hope all well.
