i drove all right...

...to get to you. Is that all right?

Yes, all right. I have a tendency to drive into oncoming traffic or kerbs - but never in a straight line. I blame the wang eye. Holding the steering wheel in a highly asymmetric manner seems to alleviate the problem in the short term.

Learning to drive is an amazing thing. It has added a whole new dimension to the world: in a few short months I could potentially have the freedom to go wherever I so choose! Given that any car I could afford to buy/insure in the delights of inner city Leeds probably won't drive very far... I cross roads with heightened awareness nowadays. And I am in awe of anyone who can drive easily. It's no easy task! Hyde Park; an area that looks relatively quiet, is a driving nightmare. Oncoming traffic is most troublesome. Buses should be banned. And clutch control? Don't even get me started.

I have decided that cars should only go forwards (I haven't tried to reverse yet, but see no need), should only have 3 gears and should all be quite small. Drivers should sit in the centre of the front of the car to improve spatial awareness. Gear sticks should not be placed so close to instructor's knees. All hazards should be removed (I include myself in that). Sat navs should shout out instructions for driving - I'm fine when told what to do. I forget how to drive if left to my own devices.

Still, I've only had about 5 lessons. Sure it will "click" anytime now...

We could get rid of reverse gear, except that:
    1. we would then need more roundabouts for when we've gone wrong

    2. carparks would have fewer spaces

    3. we would never hear those nice tunes that certain vehicles play when they reverse

Of these, number 3 is the most important factor

The reverse tunes consisting of continual equi-lengthed beeps: how is it that they sound off-beat?

I actually know the answer to that question, but I don't think you really wanted to know.

    well ok then!

I think its because each beep noise makes a slight almost inaudible noise at the end as it switches off, like a 'pup' noise, which after a few bleeps creates an artificial beat. So after a few beeps you with the beats inbetween the beeps sound off the beat even though you can't really hear the inbetween bits properly.

btw, you get some that play little tunes!!
